Women's Missions

Mission Project for the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women.
We are now collecting toiletries for the women at FCCW.  It is critical that you not vary from this list nor exceed the size limits for any product. The indicated weights are the MAXIMUM for each item (please get as close to that weight as possible WITHOUT GOING OVER). All items should be put in a gallon-size zip lock bag, and brought to the stage in the  church Fellowship Hall.

Cards, Postage, Pencils
This fall we will begin collecting all-occasion greeting cards, Christmas cards, postage stamps, and pencils for the FCCW.  Begin gathering these things, and we'll let you know when to bring them to church.

Annual School Supplies Mission Project
The Woman's Missionary Union is collecting money to provide basic school supplies for about 120 needy studentst at Woodbrook Elementary School. To date we have collected $1,223 of the $1,500 that is needed.  You can help with this project by making a monetary donation through the church and marking it "School Supplies."  WMU members will shop for the best deals and deiver the supplies to the school.

Yard Sale for Nada, Kentucky
The Woman's Missionary Union is collecting household items (no clothes) for a yard sale on August 28 in the community that CBF Missionary Paula Settle serves in Nada, Kentucky.  Nada is one of the poorest communities in the U.S.   A group from UBC will transport the items and conduct the sale.  Take this opportunity to go through your house to see what you can donate:  linens, dishes, cookware, curtains, small furniture, lamps, rugs, small appliances,  etc.  Items will be priced from 10¢ to $10 so that the families there can afford to buy things for their homes.  Bring items to Fellowship Hall by Sunday, August 22.
We will be pricing items mornings Aug. 23-24. If you would be interested in pricing or going on the trip, contact Anne Keith <akwillgo1@aol.com> or call the church office.

Come join the new WMU Prayer Shawl Ministry
We will be getting together each 2nd and 4th Tuesday, join us either or both, in Room 120l.   Join us to quilt, knit, and crochet prayer shawls or lap robes to be given to church members and friends who need to be comforted and reminded that the people of UBC care for them in a time of need.  Bring your work materials with you, or we have plenty to share.
If you would like to be a part of this ministry of caring, but can't come to the meetings, we'd be glad to share materials and patterns so that you can create the shawls at home.  If you would like to learn to quilt, knit, or crochet come and join us.  There is a collection box in the Fellowship Hall for donations of cotton quilt fabrics and yarn.  Cash donations are also welcome.  For more information call Anne Keith 295-7822 or Sarah Buchanan 872-9422.

Our Woman's Missionary Union (WMU) Circles meet regularly and provide ministry and services to our community, country, and abroad year-round.  Our WMU President is Diane Mundell, 974-7584.  Please feel free to contact her for additional information.

Mission Projects
Greeting cards for FWCC -- Each fall the WMU collects all-occasion greeting cards, Christmas cards, stationery, and stamps for the women at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women.  Look for collection boxes near the Church Office and on the stage in the Fellowship Hall

Operation Christmas Child (Operation Shoebox) -- Each November, participants fill shoeboxes with school supplies, toys, and personal items, which are then delivered to children around the world by Franklin Graham's organization Samaritan's Purse.

Mission Trip to Charlotte, NC-- Each November people from UBC travel by church bus to the Samaritan's Purse facility in Charlotte to help process shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.  It is an overnight trip that is always fun. Call Anne Keith at 295-7822 if you would like to go.

Easter Angel Project -- Each spring, in cooperation with the Central Virginia Baptist Association and the Charlottesville/Albemarle Joint Security Complex,  we prepare Easter baskets for children in our area whose parents are incarcerated.  In 2009 we delivered 48 baskets.

School Supplies -- Each fall we collected money and purchase school supplies for children at Woodbrook Elementary.  These children all qualified for free or reduced lunch. Fall of 2008 there were only 50 needy children at this school, in the fall of 2009 there were 157.

Baptist Student Center Dinners -- Twice each school year all of our circles join together to fix a meal for the students at the Baptist collegiate ministry center at the University of Virginia.  This fall there are 30-40 students getting together for dinner, fellowship and study each Thursday night.

WMU Circles

The Annie Armstrong Circle meets the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in members homes.  We work on mission projects and other needs we learn about in our community.  Some of our projects are wrapping shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, filling the Easter baskets for the Easter Angel Project, and making holiday favors for residents of two local nursing homes. For more information contact Barbara Murray 977-7046.

The Circle of JOY (Jesus first, Others second, and Yourself third) [formerly the Mildred Wyatt and Joanna Maiden Circles] meets every other month, Friday mornings in the Parlor at Church. Since the combined Circles have no new identity so far we reserve the right to develop our goals. We have taken Dee Donaldson, a Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) affiliate in Africa (and our pastor's wife, Sharron Leland's sister) as a special project. Sharron keeps us updated on her work.  Last fall we sent stamps and cards to Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women. We took part in two of the Baptist College Ministries weekly meals.  In December sponsored a holiday party for the ladies at the Nada Mission in Kentucky run by Paula Settle, another CBF affiliate missionary.  Cards to shut in’s and cookies at Christmas will be an ongoing project.  We welcome new members. Contact person: Martha Wood-295-4601.

Kittie Colvin Trail Circle meets the first Tuesday of each month in members' homes, at 7:00 p.m., to work on WMU missions projects and other needs we learn about in our community.  In addition to participating in the church-wide WMU ministries, we also sponsor a Christmas Post Office where church members can deliver their Christmas cards for other church members and donate the postage cost saved to Global Missions.  We "adopt" a family through Albemarle County Schools and purchase clothing for the children at Christmas.  We regularly take treats, individual serving heat-and-eat foods, and laundry supplies to the University of Virginia Hospitality House.  We cook and serve dinner one night each winter when UBC hosts area homeless men for two weeks through PACEM.  We provide gifts and cards to shut-ins at Christmas, their birthdays, and other holidays.  Each December we draw names for Secret Pals and do little treats, gifts and surprises for each other throughout the coming year.  During the summer our meetings are held on Sunday evenings at area restaurants for a special girls-night-out.  We are ages 30-60 plus and welcome you to join us.  See our picture above!  For more information contact Sarah Buchanan 872-9422.
